Home Trends of the Year

Just like with fashion and diets, homes go through periods of trends. What was popular last year may no longer be in fashion. You don't need a degree in design or architecture to stay on top of what's in style.

In this day and age of television and internet it's easy to become overwhelmed with choices. To find trends that speak to you, cut back on staged television programs and focus on finding real inspiration that works for you.

Open Your Eyes

Take on the role of local detective and keep your eyes open for design in your area. What you see on television may not actually make sense for your neighborhood or climate so look for clues as you navigate. Neighbors may update siding or entry door colors while builders will be using the latest materials and styles that make sense for your location.

Resources

There are no shortage of websites that you can use for inspiration: Houzz and Pinterest to name a few. Your local library also has stacks of magazines like Country Living, Home & Garden and This Old House. Start by creating an inspiration folder or notebook and add photos, paint samples or notes about things you like. Over time you'll start to be able to pin point your style and determine what works for you.
