Spring Cleaning
Spring is on the way! This time of year is the best time to clear ice off the roof, inspect the house for water damage, address water damage to prevent mold from forming, run a dehumidifier to soak up any moisture, and, if planning to sell, finish those incomplete projects.
Water damage is one of the hazards of winter weather and with that comes the risk of mold. There are a few tips you can follow to ensure you don't end up with nasty mold growth.
Ventilation
A dehumidifier is like kryptonite to mold. If you notice water damage in a room, immediately set up a dehumidifier or install a window unit AC to help pull moisture from the air. Keep closet doors open in the space to ensure air is able to circulate properly.
Treatment
If you see evidence of water damage or mold beginning to form, ensure that you properly ventilate first. Next, you can replace moldy drywall or treat with a product like Kilz. Locate the source of the water and repair to avoid future damage. After ensuring that the leak has been fixed you can move forward with priming and painting.
Prevention
The first place you will want to inspect is your roof to determine if there is a leak. Areas without a steep pitch or valleys creating ice dams are the first places to inspect. Repair any leaks, ensuring proper use of ice and water shield and quality shingles are used.
